Reviewing The Novel The Wasp Factory English Literature Essay

The Wasp Factory was the first Iain Banks book I read, and it was weird. But Weird good, as you pointed out it starts and with no explanation relentessly drawing you in till you just have to keep reading to figure out what to hell is going on.

The Wasp Factory was another of these books (a matter of maybe six months in this case) – every time I went into Waterstones I picked it up and put it down. I’m glad that I finally decided to keep hold of it.

The blurb from the brilliant but grotesque novel The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. This small paragraph summarises the extraordinary journey into the mind of the sixteen year old Frank Cauldhame, alienated from society by his flouting of societal norms and his isolated home on a Scottish island, who murdered three people before he was ten years old. Yet this is only the beginning of a story that develops into more than his insight over the killing of his relatives, spilling over into a hideous array of stories and experiences that place it as the most shocking book I have ever read. It was truly horrifying. In other words, I loved it.

One reason the novel has such impact is because the world in which Frank inhabits is simultaneously our world and a completely different one altogether. It is clear that the setting is Scotland, and normal life occurs around Frank, but does not explicitly come into contact with him, despite the rather bland and generic name. In fact, the closest he gets to normal pastimes are his occasional visits to the mainland pub that he frequents with his dwarf friend, Jamie, yet even these are seen through the eyes of a teenage boy who feels disgust towards all the women he meets there. He lacks a sexual identity as well as having an absence of friends, relationships, schooling and an average family life; all factors which combine to create someone altogether removed from normality and containing an immeasurable amount of hatred for someone so young. Frank instead lives alone on the island with his father, spending his days consulting his Sacrifice Poles, poles containing the fresh body parts of certain animals he has personally killed and dismembered, and the Factory itself. This is a mysterious mechanism that is not initially explained, but, when finally revealed, provokes a feeling of repulsion but also the fear and admiration that Frank himself awards it.

The Wasp Factory - Essay - 543 Words - Free Essay …

These three novels place women at the centre of their narratives, as narrators of their own stories. This assertion of narrative control is echoed in the texts in the positions of power held and protected by the women: Kate as a high flyer in The Business, Isis as future leader of the Luskentyrians, Frank/Francis as the lord of his island. In this sense, Banks insists upon a position of gender equality, with women as aggressive, as clever and as resourceful as men. This is, of course, particularly the case with Frank in The Wasp Factory, where the insistence upon a violent and misogynistic code is finally turned on its head with the revelation that Frank is, in fact, Francis. Gender is therefore constructed and not innate, as it is, too, for Kate and Isis, products of adoptive or extended families. However, just as Frank must accommodate a new version of self and gender at the end of The Wasp Factory, so do Kate and, to an extent, Isis look towards the possibility of other options at the end of the texts, options which include the specifically female roles of mother and wife. Holding positions of control and authority seems to preclude the possibility of exploration of other areas of female experience in these texts, with the possibility of other roles only offered at the end of the novels.
