Vegetarianism is the principle or practice of excluding all meat and fish, and sometimes, in the case of vegans, all animal products (such as eggs, cheese etc.)From one’s diet (Webster dictionary).
The first four listed are considered to be "true" vegetarians because by definition the term vegetarian diet is composed mainly of plant foods and may or may not include eggs and dairy products.
According to Stepaniak, the major distinction between vegans and vegetarians is that the former strictly avoid consumption of animal products or foods processed using animal products, while the latter only avoid animals products that involve killing of the animals (154).
My purpose is to prove that vegetarianism is the diet that offers more benefits to our health, spirit, and society.
Nowadays, health is the number one individual and governmental concern.
Healthy lifestyles have come to dominate the minds of many people in the contemporary society, a fact that has brought to life many exciting trends in all aspects of social functioning. As food is directly related to our health, it is no wonder that people have begun to pay increased attention to the food they eat. In particular, this interest has sparked renewal of vegetarianism, which is an easy way to attain a healthy lifestyle through abandoning animal foods.
With more people becoming vegetarian we examine which is healthier. But the rest of the population is sticking to their guns and eating meat. We take a look
Types of Vegetarians There are varied types of vegetarians; lacto-ovo-vegetarians eat foods that do not consist of animal flesh (meat, poultry, fish), but they eat both eggs and milk....
Researchers at Oxford University recently followed 35,000 individuals aged 20 to 89 for a period of five years and discovered that vegans are 30% more likely to break a bone than their vegetarian and flesh-eating peers. A subsequent study conducted by Sydney’s Garvan Institute for Medical Research found that vegetarians had bones 5% less dense than meat-eaters. This can be attributed to the fact that many vegetarians and vegans consume very little calcium due to the limitations of their diet.
The above does not mean that vegetarianism is only good for those who have weight problems. Those who are satisfied with their body mass index can find a lot of benefits in consuming vegetarian products and abandoning meat. Few medical professionals would argue that “the high percentage of fat in it is one of the main reasons for heart attacks, high blood pressure” (Lopa Berlin 2004). Thus, for an average American man the risk of dying of a heart attack amounts to 50%, whereas for a vegetarian this risk is only 15%, a fact explained by relative consumption of cholesterol by meat eaters and vegetarians (Vegsource).
The vegetarian diet follows a dietary pattern that is characterized by the consumption of plant-like foods and the avoidance of flesh foods (meat, poultry, and fish)....
Today, vegetarian activists are throwing pies at Ronald McDonald and the Pork Queen, scrawling "meat is murder" in prominent locations, committing terrorist acts of arson, and waging media campaigns equating meat consumption with cannibalism.
Plants are also sentient: they are conscious of sense perceptions and can suffer pain. If vegetarians and vegans are concerned about pain caused to sentient beings then they should refrain from eating plants, as well. But that is absurd because then there would be nothing to eat. Therefore, eating meat is as permissible as eating plants.
Vegetarians are, on the average, far healthier than those who consume the typical Western diet, and enjoy a lower incidence of many chronic diseases....
While there are many reasons for choosing a vegetarian diet, the most important are health reasons, environmental and economic reasons, and, above all, ethical reasons.
