the road trip, or the long through-hike, or the pilgrimage, is that the ‘‘point’’ is so deliberately minimal — to arrive at, you know, the end — and the decisions involved so banal (stop for gas now, or in a bit?) that the distinction between signal and noise is blurred. The point of a photograph of a trail, or some billboard half-seen out the window of a bus, is that it could easily be exchanged for the image taken immediately before or immediately afterward. The random sample communicates in one unpremeditated frame all the significance that particular person’s drive down that particular road could possibly contain. This is the aspiration common to road-trip literature and road-trip photography: The moment at the gas station is held, insistently, to express as much about the total experience as the shot of the Eiffel Tower.

Dressed for a fall afternoon on the farm, the kindergarten classes took a hayride to Roots on Monday, October 16 to pick the pumpkins they planted in June. Each student chose two pumpkins: one to take home and another, which they will use to make pies and bread in the culinary classroom. The annual outing also included a walk through the corn maze, apple eating, and a visit with the hens. Contributing photographer: Leslie Finkelstein

The sixth grade Water Walk on Thursday, October 5 simulated what many around the world must do every day to access water. The students walked from Finney Building to the pond where they filled gallon jugs. Then, they carried their containers to Roots Farm where they watered the fruit trees in the orchard, making sure nothing went to waste. The one-mile walk gave the students a deeper understanding of the global water crisis and the impact their fundraiser for water filtration kits will have on schools in Uganda. The sixth grade effort will result in 18 kits! The third grade supported the effort and joined them for the walk.
