Vindicating the Founders: Meet the Author

Authors sometimes grumble about their editors, and the question I’ve chosen as a title for this post is one I’ve often heard authors repeat.

The following sections outline the generally accepted structure for an academic argument paper. Keep in mind that these are guidelines and that your structure needs to be flexible enough to meet the requirements of your purpose and audience.

The renowned twentieth century author and journalist, Ernest Miller Hemingway had provided the world of literature a few of the best pieces. Hemingway essays and Hemingway short stories are perfect examples of modern literature. The understated and economic style of Ernest Hemingway essays mesmerized the readers of the twentieth century. Most of Hemingway’s essays and short stories were produced during the mid of 1920’s and mid of 1950’s.

Weak "narrative" topic sentence: Lily Bart next travels to Bellomont, where she meets Lawrence Selden again.

Stronger "topic-based" topic sentence: A second example of Lily's gambling on her marriage chances occurs at Bellomont, where she ignores Percy Gryce in favor of Selden. [Note that this tells your reader that it's the second paragraph in a series of paragraph relating to the thesis, which in this case would be a thesis related to Lily's gambling on her marriage chances.]

Think of the engagement of your reader's interest as a challenge which your essay will meet.

The editor’s name is David Burton. David, an editor with For Pity Sake, is also an award-winning playwright and theatre director, whose plays include April’s Fool, Orbit and The Landmine Is Me. He has written a memoir titled How to be Happy. As an editor, Dave possesses that rare quality, (rare in my experience), in that he takes the trouble to see into an author’s mind, think about where he or she is trying to get to, and how he might help them to arrive.

Meet the Author Behind the Student Loan Forgiveness …

For Love Alone meant a great deal to me when I first read the novel in the mid nineteen seventies, a time when I was teaching myself to write. It is among the top ten, if not top five novels from which I learnt the most. The mid nineteen seventies was also the time I met Christina Stead, while she was a writer-in-residence at Monash University. This post – which is really more of a personal testament than a critique of the novel – is not the place to describe our meeting. Suffice to say, Stead struck me as both gracious and formidable – gracious in that she had taken the time to read and think about a manuscript I’d sent her – formidable, as well as accurate, in her criticism of it.

When discussing the importance of active acceptance, the author refers to Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now, and on the next page quotes a poem by an ancient Sufi mystic. Quotations and references abound, but they never feel intrusive in the text, or stuck on for effect. They don’t detract from the central story; they enrich it.

Yet an early chapter heading reads ‘Cut, Poison, Burn and Laugh’ and time and again I found myself laughing while reading My Big Breast Adventure, which is based on the author’s blog posts and includes comments by readers. When I stopped to think and wipe my eyes, I asked myself why I was laughing when the author was going through hell. Answer: I was laughing because she made me laugh. McDonald’s humour is the buffer between her threatened sanity and the daily, weekly, monthly rounds of tests and chemo, radiation, more tests and more chemo.

Thoreau has somewhat misleadingly been classified as a New Englandtranscendentalist, and—even though he never rejected thislabel—it does not fit in many ways. Some of his majordifferences from Emerson have already been discussed, and furtherdifferences appear when Thoreau is compared to such figures as OrestesBrownson, Margaret Fuller, and Bronson Alcott. A history oftranscendentalism in New England which appeared in the late nineteenthcentury mentions Thoreau only once, in passing (Frothingham 1886,133). And a more recent history of the movement concludes that Thoreauhad little in common with this group of thinkers, who were for themost part committed to some version of Christianity, to a dualisticunderstanding of mind and matter, and to the related idea that senseexperience is unreliable (Boller 1974, 29–35 & 176). Acrucial step in Thoreau’s intellectual development occurred whenhe “disassociated himself from Emerson’s Transcendentalistview of nature as symbol” (Slicer 2013, 181), as a currentscholar notes. It was suggested above that a better way of situatingThoreau within the Western philosophical tradition is to consider hima kind of transcendental idealist, in the spirit of Kant. For reasonsthat ought to be obvious by now, he should be of interest to studentsof Kant, Fichte, and Schelling—all of whom he studied at firstor second hand—and possibly Schopenhauer. Thoreau was a capableand enthusiastic classicist, whose study of ancient Greek and Romanauthors convinced him that philosophy ought to be a lived practice:for this reason, he can profitably be grouped with othernineteenth-century thinkers, such as Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, whowere critics of philosophy in the early modern period. Yet he also hasthe distinction of being among the first Western philosophers to besignificantly influenced by ancient Chinese and Indian thought. Heanticipates Bergson and Merleau-Ponty in his attention to the dynamicsof the embodied mind, and shares with Peirce and James a concern forproblems of knowledge as they arise within practical experience.

As the title suggests, As The Lonely Fly is quintessentially a story of exile and migration; and for humans, if not for birds, this is a lonely business. Each of the three women the novel centres on must make her own decisions and adjustments, and, perhaps inevitably, end up being misunderstood by other members of the family. Sometimes decisions are taken out of a character’s hands, as with Chava’s deportation, but even without that stark example, an individual’s dreams and hopes for justice, her longing to make a contribution, are bound to be compromised. As The Lonely Fly tells an important, timely story, through its rich variety of characters and beautiful prose.
