Hi, Liz! Thank you for the well-organized sample. However, I have a question. The point is that my teachers referring to the book called Successful Writing say that it is important to write a short contrary opinion before a conclusion. It is really written in the book (“…You also include a paragraph presenting the opposing viewpoint and reason why you think it is an unconvincing viewpoint…”). What do you think about it? Will it improve an essay or vice versa?
I watched your Opinion essay video today. Everything seems to be easy while watching your video which I think is because of your clear explanations. But when I sit down to practice on my own I find it very difficult to write 250 words. 🙁
You have two questions and you answer them both. One body paragraph for each. Keep your essay logical and well organised at all times. The first question must answer your views on all issues – they are connected. It is about people who do functional work getting lowly paid and others get more money.
Thanks lot Liz.
So I will try to do as you do and keep it in the introduction paragraph, however I am guessing it wouldn’t cost me any marks if I forgot myself and used “I believe” in a body paragraph right? I am also assuming that the same would apply for for all kinds of essays where our opinion is required (in other words all kind of articles that we write”In my opinion,” for the thesis sentence) right?
for discussion essays do we want to write 3 body paragraphs for discussing about one view, discussing about the other view and for our opinion. Or is it ok to write 2 body paragraphs for discussing two views and say our opinion in the conclusion?
Your main ideas are not off topic at all. You’ve organised your ideas and paragraphs very well. But some of your supporting points might less focused. For example, in your first body paragraph you are absolutely right to write about children becoming self absorbed which could continue into their adult life. This is relevant because the essay question is about a society of individuals. But your point about parents not being able to control them is not on topic – this is not about parental control, it’s about selfishness. Even with minor points lacking a bit of focus, it is still possible to hit band 7 in Task Response.
Similarly, if there is no heading or a centered section marker, as might occur at a minor section break, I prefer the first paragraph to be inset unless it is otherwise styled with a drop cap or some other distinguishing style that looks ridiculous when indented. To have a gap followed by a plain, ordinary unindented block paragraph in content that otherwise uses leading indents on every paragraph just looks odd to me, and always has.
Yes, what do you have to say about not indenting at all and just adding an extra line between paragraphs. I happen to like the extra line–introduces more white space into an interp panel.
I was wondering what would be the ideal standard for printed novels, where there is a new paragraph almost every line (different characters speaking).
Indenting every paragraph sometimes makes entire pages of indented lines, or worse, almost entire pages, with the odd non indented line, continuation of the previous one, sticking out and getting all the visual attention.
It is really dilemma for me now, what do you thik is best?
Hi Liz, I did my exam tod2ay but I am worried. For my essay paragraphs, I made sure the paragraphs ended at the middle of the line.
However I did not indent or leave a blank space. It’s very obvious that it’s a different paragraph but no space and indentation. Would I be penalised for this? Should I forget it and just write another ielts?
If you don’t have paragraphs, you will get band 5 for Coherence and Cohesion, which is 25% of your marks in task 2 (this also applies to task 1). You MUST use logical paragraphs and use linking devices well to get a high score. In fact, you must have done very well in task 1 and also in the other aspects of writing task 2 to have got band 7 overall. I can’t say if it will certainly raise your score as it will all depend on your performance on the day. The fact that you don’t seem to be aware of what the examiner is looking for and how your writing is scored suggests that you are taking risks for the writing component of the test. Seriously consider getting at least one of my advanced lessons to open your eyes to the techniques you need to use and the skills you need to show in your essay writing: . I wish you lots of luck in your next test. Please let me know how it goes 🙂
I am not –at least at the time– thinking about writing fiction or poetry, just writing practical things: good essays, powerful one-page writings, writings which express my meaning concisely, accurately and learnedly in one page. To do this I have pressured myself into finding books any trying to instruct myself, but it’s not been enough There needs to be some people around to be like a community. Without it I lose track or forget or lose interest (you know the last time I tried doing this, bettering my writing was this time last year and I do not even remember what I wrote then.)
Hi there! Ms Liz, regarding what extent do you agree or disagree, if ever I will stand for partly agree. Which for me, I partly agreee because it is not the best way to deal with the problem, there should be a supplemental option. In my first paragraph, I will discuss the positive effects of physical education in school in fighting obesity problems.
Second paragraph would be this way ” However, there are other options that should be blended in physical education in school to achieve an optimal effect of eliminating obesity. This is the importance of healthy diet that should be incorporated into physical education to achieve an optimal effect in eliminating obesity. Because nowadays fast foods are everywhere which students tend to choose more often regarding everyday nourishment. Lastly, my conclusion would be, “To conclude physical education could give a positive effect in hindering obesity in children, however, to further achieve the best result of lowering cases of overweight individuals, proper diet should also be included. Thank you Ms Liz.
