Jesus is recorded as mentioning slaves in one of his parables. It is important to realize that the term " girl" or "maid" in many English translations of the Bible, like the American Standard Version, Amplified Bible, Phillips New Testament, Revised Standard Version, etc. refer to slaves, not employees like a butler, cook, or maid. Here, a slave which did not follow his owner's will would be beaten with many lashes of a whip. A slave who was unaware of his owner's will, but who did not behave properly, would also be beaten, but with fewer stripes.

Neither Jesus, nor St. Paul, nor any other Biblical figure is recorded as saying anything in opposition to the institution of slavery. Slavery was very much a part of life in Judea, Galilee, in the rest of the Roman Empire, and elsewhere during New Testament times. The practice continued in England, Canada and the rest of the English Empire until the early 19th century; it continued in the U.S. until later in the 19th century.

"Receiving slavery as one of the conditions of society, the New Testament nowhere interferes with or contradicts the slave code of Moses; it evenpreserves a letter [to Philemon] written by one of the most eminent Christian teachers[Paul] to a slave owner on sending back to him his runaway slave."1

An Analysis on Slavery and Motherhood in Toni Morrison…

While in prison, Paul met a runaway slave, Onesimus, the property of a Christian -- presumably Philemon. He sent the slave back to his owner. This action is forbidden in Deuteronomy 23:15-16:

Much of the novel focuses on a community of ex-slaves and how they manage to get back to normal with their lives.

Women slaves experienced even more hardships in their lives, as they were denying their opportunities to become loving mothers, faithful wives and sisters with the sense of compassion. The woman in slavery is not able to give all her love to her children and raise them true stable identities, not because they are bad or empty inside and do not care, but because they do not know how to do that. They do not have enough strengths and energy to love, teach, explain and support. Therefore, slave children start the new circle of self-alienated people who are not able to live independently, feel themselves equal members of the society and enjoy all possible joys of life, as they consider they do not have right to do that.

Slaves did not believe in their own existence, they easily became tired and depressed. For instance, Paul D even developed the protection strategy from emotional pain he could not endure any more, and then he decided that he would never love anyone or anything with his all his heart. But the ability to love intensively is one of the greatest gifts to the human-beings, which brings happiness, joy and energy to stand to the hardships. We are nothing without love in our hearts.
